Home Modifications That Positively Affect Your Well-Being

If you are like many people, you spend a lot of time in your home. Nearly everyone at least sleeps in their own home much of the time. Depending on your schedule and lifestyle, you may also work, relax and eat there frequently as well. Because your environment affects your overall well-being, it is important to make sure your home is properly designed for all the activities that go on in it. Mighty House provides some tips to help you transform your home into a healthier, more calming environment.

Sleep

A good night’s rest is key to good health. Practicing proper sleep hygiene is a major part of this. In addition to well-known practices like staying off the internet for an hour before bed, keep in mind that your environment affects sleep as much as the behavior does. Choose a mattress that is supportive and comfortable. If necessary, use a fan or white noise machine to block out unwanted sounds. If clutter causes you to stress, declutter your bedroom so that you are better able to relax. Decorate with colors that you find relaxing, and consider bringing in comforting knickknacks.

Work

If you work from home, whether full-time or part-time, it is important to have a workspace that is designed for productivity. Make sure you have a comfortable chair and all the necessary technology. Declutter and organize so that you are able to find everything easily. Keep the items you use most frequently in an accessible location. Choose lighting that is bright enough to illuminate your work but not harsh; for example, pendant lights provides excellent, dramatic lighting and come in an array of different styles and colors.  If you work better with music or white noise, invest in a quality speaker. Add decor that inspires or comforts you but that does not distract you.

Relax

If you have a particular pastime that you enjoy, creating a hobby room in your home is a wise investment. Designating a space specifically for the activity allows you to relax and re-energize yourself. Such a space can also help your mood and be an outlet for your creativity. Find a space big enough for your endeavor and keep all of your hobby supplies organized. If possible, make sure the space has a door to minimize distractions.

Create a calming atmosphere throughout the rest of your home by incorporating soothing colors and comforting materials. Turn a regular bathroom into a spa with essential oils and your favorite toiletries.

Eat

Data show that a well-designed kitchen can improve the diets of the home’s occupants. A kitchen with plenty of storage areas and work surfaces is conducive to a healthy diet by allowing you to store and prepare plenty of nutritious foods. If you don’t want to do a complete kitchen makeover, you can purchase free-standing work areas and storage units. However, it is important not to have so much in your kitchen that it’s cluttered and cramped.

Choose appliances that make cooking easy, and make sure to keep a well-stocked pantry. Keep your pantry organized so that you always know what you have. This prevents frustration when you prepare a meal and saves you money at the grocery store by keeping you from buying things you already have.

The more time you spend at home, the more your home affects your well-being. Fortunately, you have more control over your home than most other places you spend time. Take stock of your current living areas and determine which modifications would have the greatest impact on your overall life satisfaction.
